We Assume Retirement Will “Just Happen”. How Bizarre!

Can I bother you with a question?  It’s a quick one but I’d like for you to take a few minutes to think about your answer.
==> We plan ahead for college or careers.

We understand that we must take certain classes, set money aside, and seek out financial assistance for advanced schooling. Many parents start planning for their children’s college when they’re still babies!

If we choose to go directly into the workforce, or the military, we know there is certain training we’ll need to complete; certain steps we need to take.

==> We plan weddings and vacations.
Sometimes months or even years in advance.  I’m already saving for our 2019 family vacation.  We get it!  These things don’t just happen.
==> We plan trips and projects.
==> We write business and strategic plans.
==>  We plan our day right down to the second.
These things happen

Here’s my question.
Why then, do we assume retirement will ” just happen”?

Seriously…

We know, unless we die young, we will get older!
We know we’re all aging.
We know things are getting more expensive – housing and medical care, specifically.
We know we won’t get more healthy and mobile as we get older.
We know a lot of private companies have not been able to fully fund retirement systems.
We know Social Security was never (ever, ever) designed to be a retirement system we would live on for 20 or 30 years.

We know these things.
Yet, we fail to plan for retirement.

How odd.  How terrifying!!

October Newsletter: 2021 Federal Benefits Annual Open Season

Since the calendar now shows 17 October, evidently September is gone.  Happy (belated) New Year to my contracting and finance friends.  I spent last month in Maine with my daughter and three of my grandchildren.  It was great to be around family and also see the foliage I’ve missed for the past 25 years.  Pictures
